Those were the good old days

…When I used to come home after playing in the park to watch Giant Robot while my mom made the newly introduced Maggi noodles for me.

…When watching an English movie meant watching an English adult movie on Doordarshan on Friday night at 11 pm.

…When the concept of a daily soap was unheard of and Hum Log, Ye jo hai Zindagi, Buniyaad, Karamchand and Rajni was ruling the roost.

…When eating food cooked by mom’s hands was an everyday affair. (*Sigh*)

…When “Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiya” and “Mile sur mera tumhara” were watched a zillion times and still never bored us.

…When a comedy movie meant “Jane bhi do yaroon” and not “Partner”.

…When bread used to cost 4 Rs and Tata salt 2 Rs.

…When I used to sit with my family on Sundays to enjoy the morning programmes. (Mahabharat, Chandrakanta, Jungle book…the list is endless)

…When going to Delhi University didn’t meant going to a fashion show and 20 Rs were more than sufficient to survive for a day in the college.

…When the streets were deserted every Sunday for one hour when Mahabharat was aired.

…When mobile phones and Gtalk were not in the picture and you have to rush to the nearest PCO to talk to a loved one.

…When we used to rent video tapes and borrow a video player from the neighbours to watch Karma and Shahenshah back to back.

…When mom used to forcefully put oil in my hair every saturday night despite my hues and cries and I had to put an old cloth on the pillow before sleeping so that I won’t spoil the cover

.…When I used to make a list of 10 songs to be provided to the “Alok casette” shop so that he can copy those songs in a single cassette which can then be enjoyed in my deck. (Note to myself – I must remove the dust from it the next time I see it.)

…When buying novels meant going to the Sunday Daryaganj market and buy pirated novels from the roadside after a heated bargaining

.…When “Spiderman” and “He-Man” cartoon series were on my “I’ll die if I don’t watch them” list.

…When despite the warnings, I used to sneak up to the first floor of the double decker bus and mom used to come up then and sit besides me.

…When Ambassadors were the most luxurious cars you could buy and I used to crib that there is no variety of cars on Indian roads whenever I watched some English movie.

…When a black and white Texla television and two channels were sufficient for entertainment.
…When mom always filled two glass bottles of Rasna(mango flavour) and kept them in the refrigerator and I used to grab them as soon as I came back from school.

…When living didn’t meant running and I had time to stop and smell the roses.
Another note to myself – I am sounding old. I must stop cribbing and control my pangs of nostalgia. 😐 Social Bookmarks :

  1. So nice yaar. How every ones life at that time was so beautiful. We used to play as our wish. Every thing is a wonder for me in those days esp regarding technology. Just because of Mahabharat, Jungle book i liked Hindi very much. I still remeber Ek se bhadkar ek on saturday nights and Amitabh movies on Friday nights. Just to watch Rangoli, i used to wake up in sunday morning. While watching Ek se bhadkar ek which was sponsored by BPL at that time, i used to think Made in India song by Alisha is their advertisement. After coming to 12th only i came to know that is a pop video. So many of ur memories are just like mine. Gone are golden days. Thanks for the nice blog.

  2. Nostalgic…

I loved “Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiya”, that was kind of nice although I didn’t understand the message then.

and how could I forget the cartoons that came at 10 on Sunday mornings…

  3. Okay, everybody is making posts about their golden olden days. Even I’m feeling soo old right now. I remember watching He-Man and Shaktimaan and so much stuff back then. Ab toh everything has changed, and is still changing at such a rapid place. Damnit yaar, I miss my mom hugging me to stop me from crying because there was a power cut when they were showing Shaktimaan. Ah, those days… 😦

  4. Ha..ha…ha… Bhaiya this shows ki aap kitne bade ho gaye ho… Waise achi collection hai…I was trying to find out that traditional Doordarshan tune which used to come alongwith the scene in which Milkyway was shown getting enlarged before the Doordarshan programmes get started. Kisi ko mile to batana…

  5. man….it was so nostalgic 🙂 Back then those serials seemed so awesome bt now i can stop smiling. I mean that giant robot person looks more like doing PT then nethin else 😆 n does’nt he look like a egyptian pharoah??? bt it was still awesome…bttr then nethin damn serial or cartoon 2day. shee i miss those doordarshan days…..damn ekta kapoor…she’s removed all d innocence 4m d serials 😳 go watch this link yaar

  6. Very Nice Amith…and i want to point out some more memories of those golden days like SURABHI, a very good programme which was telecasted on sunday nights..and TEHIKIKAT is the best detective serial i have ever seen..In these highly technical days we have good enough number of channels with variety of programmes, worth of nothing. Doordarshan is like home made food and these channels are like restaurants…

  7. Hey Amit..
This really reminds me of those golden days maybe not the same programmes which u watched but “Mahabharath” and “Surabhi” was on my list too. Those were truely goood. I also get the hint tht u r missing ur “MOM” very much…

  8. Its nice to go back to the time of classics I must say as today television is full of all the nonsense saas bahu soaps.. courtsey Ekta Kapoor.
And how can u forget Chitrahaar, Byomkesh Bakshi,Dekh Bhai Dekh and the special craze for the telecast of filmfare awards and new year programs every year… I used to simply sit in the quilt till late midnight to watch these and having “moongfalli & gajak” side by side…. 🙂 Simply miss all that time… and now the winters too.. 😦

  9. bohat maza aya.i really loved it.i dont believe dat i had forgoten all
these memories.v all are so busy in our lives dat v dont get the time
to cherish all these beautiful memories.i dont understand y the hell v are living our lives in a mes.
waise tuje yad hoga humne rat ko charpai k nechw chup kr bhoot bulane ki nakam koshish ki thi.hum khud kitna dar gye the.aur kuch hua bhi naone think u r very creative that iknow from begning but to this extent,i realyy didnt knew this.
    god bless.take care.mis u anna.

  10. …was quite nostalgic. This also reminds me that Doordarshan united all of us, the whole of INDIA — meaning, we were all watching the same TV programs. Today, the case is different because of the various regional satellite channels. Am glad that in our generation, atleast, we are able to share these moments though we are from different parts of the country.

  11. @Vijaya Bharat : I have completely forgotten “Ek se badhkar ek”. It was only after you reminded last night, I was able to recall it. 🙂 Even Superhit Muqabla was very popular. And my parents used to think that “Made in India” was a very vulgar song. 😆

@Anand : Yes, I was watching the video on youtube yesterday and for some moments I completely lost the idea of time. Sometimes I feel that all these videos are nothing less than time machines. 🙂

@Ish : I never saw Shaktimaan because by that time cable channels were already here. But somehow I would have loved to watch it. My mom was really cruel when it came to letting me watch my favourite cartoons. I remember how I had to beg to watch “The wizard of Oz”. 🙂

@RXK : I tried to find that in youtube but couldn’t find it. 😦 I even tried the title song of Hum Log, Karamchand and Rajni but no luck. Rajni always lead me to Rajnikant. 😦

@Riddhima : When I was embedding this link of “Giant Robot” I rechecked it so many times. I somehow couldn’t believe that it was like that. I thought I was making a mistake. And remember, how he used to fight with giant lizards and throw them on the buildings? 🙂

@Srinivas Rao Alapati : Very well said. Yes it was just like Home made food. Surabhi was one of my favourites too…and Karamchand was THE detective serial for me. 🙂

@Sujani : I think Mahabharat and Ramayan were two serials which created history. Now we can’t even think of a serial reaching that heights. And the forte of Surbhi was its simplicity. And not only mom, I am missing many people right now. 😦

    @Aparna : Thanks a lot. Hope it left a smile. 🙂

@Atipriya : Yes, even I am missing winters now. Its almost two years now and all I have seen is rain and more rain and summers. 😦 And there were so many more serials like Malgudi Days, Zabaan Sambhal ke, Ye jo hai Zindagi, Tamas, Doosra Keval, Fauji, Circus…..and yes new year programmes. We used to sit with Mungfali and watch it till the end. And lets don’t start on Ekta Kapoor…I don’t want to dirty my blog. 😐

@Sreejith : “Swat Kats” followed by “Joney Quest” and “Dexter”…yes I too saw them very religiously. Ahhhhh..I am going to cry now. 😦

@Esha : Abe, tu comment likh rahi hai ya letter. 😆 Yes, I remember that Bhoot bulane wala disaster. We were so scared that it might actually come, and then we stopped in the middle. 🙂

@ArunGJ : Yes, I complelety agree. Somehow having a single channel to watch had its own advantage. But at that time we didn’t realized it. Its now that all that is gone and lost, all we can do is, feel nostalgic. 😦

  12. sahi yaar amit tune to purane din yaad kara diye….lakin malgudi days and vyomkesh bakshi was my feverite…..
wo sunday movie hamesha yaad rahegi …uss se pahale vikram betal….

apni colony ki team banana or dusri colony se match lagana ……

bahut badhiya maja aa gaya……lage raho

  13. hmm Rasna and jungle book.. thanks for the reminder :-D.. yes talk about television.. I still remember standing on the roof top with my father turning the antenna when DD2 was launched! 😛

And why? cos DD2 had (walt disney) cartoons!

  14. @amit
yeah he used to fight these weird kinda creatures 😆 n i used 2 cheer him up like he’s doing it 4 me  bt thanx once again for reminding me all these innocent and sweet things. 🙂 n hey even my parents used to find “made in india” and “tu cheez badi hai mast mast” as dirty songs. i remeber when this song came on superhit muqabla…they used to change d channel  nw wen i c aaj kal k gaane, those songs seem like kiddo stuff 😆

  15. @Jitender : Arree Haan. How could I forget Vikram Beetaal!!!! And then “Sinhasan Battisi” and “Potli Baba Ki”. Thanks for reminding. 🙂

@Balu : Oh yes, those wierd antennas. 🙂 they should be kept in a museum now. 🙂 And yes, how could we forget Duck Tales. Yuhuuu. 🙂

@Riddhima : You are always welcome. 🙂 Its amazing how a Mallika or Rakhi Sawant can change the perspectives so much. “Made in India” looks like a bhajan in front of all the songs which come today. 🙂

  16. You’re right. Looking at a topless Milind Soman and a half clad Alisha Chinai must have been a big deal. Aajkal to everybody is nanga punga in all the movies. Perspectives are changing too.

  17. Oh God! I had a ditto post on my blog a couple of weeks back, and I also put almost the same songs/serials. 🙂 I can’t tell you how nostalgic I felt when I saw these videos after years! Those were the best days of my life…yeah yeah…summer of 89?! Haha.

  18. @Ish : Perspectives are changing for the younger generation only. The older generation is still the same. My father still blushes red on seeing a half naked Mallika. 🙂
@Ruhi : I don’t know if they were the best or not, but yes I look back very fondly at those memories, specially after what happened to television in the past 10 years. 😦 I hardly watch tv anymore because there is nothing to watch now. Its all gone. 😦

  19. @Prax : 😆 Thanks. Phew!!! I am so tired. 🙂
This is becoming my favourite timepass nowadays…remembering the good old days. Guess I am getting old.

  20. bahut maza aaya purani yaaden yaad aayi.Nowadays there is not any emotional, respect for elders. Time has changed a lot. Mobile ney bhi life change kar di hay, soap opera nay bhi families mey politics daal di hay, kabhi yaad karna jab mummy winter mey anghiti mey banaya huwa garam delecious khana serve karti thi.

  21. lovely my dear friend ,it’s very true
” us mod se shuru karein phir Yeh zindagi ”
god bless you and our immortal memories .
ab sab khatam Ho chuka . oh god give me my those day back .

  22. Good Olden Days will never come back these are immortal memories .I still miss my mom and Dad who no more in this bad world which has created by us and big corporate houses Those day were the best when life was so good and I am sure we will never ever see those time again.

I was born in the later 70’s in a small town of south corner of india,my earliest memory with doordarshan was ramayan, arun kovil played the lead role and thara singh was another famous actor played the hanuman role, ramayan made history in indian television history, streets, roads were empty while ramayan airing, watching ramayan along with all the family members was a very good thing in those days, another one is mahaabharat, both ramayan and mahaabharat became huge hit in those days, not only because of the quality of the serial but also the reality most of actors, actress became household names and they became very famous after these serials, names like arun kovil, deepika, dhara singh, nitish bharadwaj, rupa gaguly, etc, another serial i could remember is circus aired on sunday nights, starred the infamous sharukh khan at that time, then after serials like thenali rama, chandra kanta, tippu sultan,so many serials, chandra kanta i could remember that villain “yakkoo”krur singh, shabhaz khan and shika swaroop played the lead role in chandrakanta it was a different desi masala serial at that time and one of my favorite, sunday morning rangoli, sunday morning serials, and sunday noon the bharat ek khoj and the hearing impaired news followed by award winning regional language movies in sunday afternoons….sunday evening movie was one of the much expected one..,chitrahaar,detective serials like dehikat and reporter, shanti was the first daily mega serial in indian television history, swabhimaan, sakthi maan, neem ka ped,ek se bhadkar ek,i could miss to mention so many serials list is endless…1987 worldcup cricket,92 world cup cricket ,1988 world olym pics 1990 world cup football,1994 world cup foot ball, those days were really good,we had no cell phones,i pads, video games dvds, but we had good and real friends, thank you very much this blog brought back some of my good olden days memories with doordarshan……

  24. Sunday ka intezaar rehta tha. Dusre ke gharpar sabhi log ek saath TV dekhne jaate the. Doordarshan ka wo initial music with rounding logo.. B&W TV jisme aawaz picture se 5 min. pehle sunaayi deti thi. Thursday aur Sunday ko hi Feature films aati thi. Aur kisi political leader ki demise pe 7 dinon ka saarangi vaadan se din kaatna mushkil ho jaata tha. Those were days when failure of electricity during night meant: close the books and it was playtime for children. There was so much of time to watch the sky or simply clouds taking different shapes or just watching moon & stars in the night when all were asleep in the open while electricity supply was gone and pinching & playing with siblings while sleeping aside our parents on the same bed. Movies ke posters hi dekh kar mesmerised ho jaate the. Watching film on videos on call(TV & VCRs carried on cycle rickshaw by the shopkeeper) was quite exciting in those days and was too depressing when the reels of cassettee got stuck during midway. 2 months ka summer vacations hota tha. Reading and exchanging comics was fad among children. There were no mobile those days and writing letters(remember Inland letters?) were too frequent. Pace of life was slower as compared to present day but had too many reasons to be happy. Everything has its cost, and we have and will continue to pay in future in terms of time and happiness.

So, you were saying?
